What laying foundation is required for 22mm sandstone slabs?

Sandstone slabs should be laid on a full wet sand-and-cement mortar bed (typically a 4:1 mix) over a compacted sub-base (such as MOT Type 1, laid to a depth of 100mm). Never spot-bed sandstone on "dots and dabs" of mortar, as this leads to uneven support, cracking, and water staining.

Do I need to apply a priming slurry to the back of the slabs?

Yes. Applying a SBR or polymer priming slurry to the underside of natural sandstone right before laying ensures a strong bond with the wet mortar bed and helps prevent natural moisture or minerals from drawing up through the stone.

What joint width should I leave between slabs?

A joint width of 10mm to 15mm is recommended. This accommodates the hand-cut, slightly irregular edges of the stone while allowing jointing mortar or brush-in jointing compound to settle properly.

Should natural sandstone paving be sealed?

Sealing is optional but recommended. A breathable natural stone sealer helps protect against algae growth, food and oil stains, and frost damage while preserving the natural colour of the stone. Always wait at least 2 to 3 months after installation to allow any natural efflorescence (salt deposits) to escape before applying a sealer.
