Square edge wallboard plasterboard is a standard internal lining board designed for constructing interior walls and ceilings that will be finished with a wet skim coat of plaster. Unlike tapered edge boards (which are designed for dry jointing and taping), square edge boards butt together flush to provide a smooth, flat substrate ideal for a full skim finish.

Common applications include:

• Internal Stud Walls: Fixed onto timber studwork or metal framing to form interior room dividers in domestic and commercial properties.

• Ceiling Linings: Screwed directly to wooden ceiling joists or counter-battens to create smooth, level ceiling bases ready for plastering.

• Dot & Dab Masonry Lining: Fixed directly to internal brickwork or concrete block walls using drywall adhesive dabs (direct bonding).

• Refurbishment & Re-boarding: Used to over-board damaged ceilings or replace degraded lath-and-plaster walls during home renovations.

Available for collection from our Rugby branch or local delivery using our own fleet.

Plasterboard will typically be delivered in one of our vans or pick-up trucks, unless ordered alongside larger goods. Delivery is kerbside and the final offloading position is always subject to safe access and the driver’s discretion.

Can I paint directly onto square edge plasterboard without wet skimming?

It is not recommended. Because the square joints create visible seams where boards butt together, painting directly onto square edge plasterboard will leave noticeable joint lines and screw indentations. For direct painting or taping without full skimming, tapered edge plasterboard should be used instead.

Do I need to use scrim tape on the joints of square edge plasterboard?

Yes. Self-adhesive fiberglass mesh scrim tape must be applied over every board joint prior to wet skimming. The tape reinforces the joints and prevents cracks from appearing in the finished plaster coat as the underlying timber framing expands or contracts.

What screws should I use to fix square edge plasterboard to timber studwork?

Use black phosphate drywall screws (25mm or 32mm length for 9.5mm board). Avoid standard wood screws, as their countersunk heads can tear through the paper facing and weaken the fixing. Drive screws until the head sits just below the paper surface without snapping the outer lining. We sell both 25mm and 32mm options.
