Melbros supply white road salt / rock salt for use in cold & snowy conditions to help prevent slips and slides for cars, cyclists and pedestrians on your property or business.

A 25kg bag of road salt covers approximately 625 to 2,500 square metres, depending on the severity of the ice and the application rate:

Pre-treating / Light Frost (10g – 15g per m²): Covers roughly 1,650 to 2,500 m².

Standard Freezing Conditions (20g – 40g per m²): Covers roughly 625 to 1,250 m².

Heavy Snow / Severe Ice (40g – 50g+ per m²): Covers roughly 500 m² or less.

How long does road salt take to start melting ice?
Under typical freezing conditions (-1°C to -5°C), road salt starts reacting almost instantly as soon as friction or moisture is present, creating a brine solution that melts surrounding ice within 10 to 20 minutes.
Does road salt expire or go bad if stored for next winter?
No. Pure sodium chloride does not degrade over time. As long as the salt is kept in a sealed container or a dry, covered area away from moisture, it can be stored indefinitely without losing its de-icing effectiveness.
Why does salt need traffic or footfall to work effectively?
Salt granules themselves do not melt ice directly; they must dissolve in water to form a brine solution. Traffic, footfall, or vehicle tires help crush the salt crystals into smaller particles, mixing them into the ice and accelerating the melting process.
Can road salt cause rust or corrosion on vehicles?
Yes. Salt water acts as an electrolyte that speeds up the oxidation process on iron and steel components. Regular underbody car washes during winter months help remove accumulated salt and prevent rust formation.
How should road salt be stored to prevent it from turning into a solid block?
Store salt in watertight grit bins or sealed bags in a covered, dry location. Adding a small amount of coarse sand can help keep bulk salt free-flowing by absorbing any ambient moisture.
