Excavate the area to the required depth and prepare the ground appropriately. A suitable geotextile membrane may be required where the subgrade is soft, unstable, or likely to mix with the aggregate layer.

Mix the granite dust (grano) with cement and water in the appropriate ratio (typically 3:1 or 4:1 for a heavy-duty screed or mortar bed) using a mechanical mixer, or spread it dry as a fine, firm bedding layer. Lay and compact the material evenly over the prepared area, screeding to a smooth finish using a straight edge.

Check the finished level and fall to ensure proper surface drainage before laying paving units or allowing a concrete/screed mix to cure.

Granite dust, also known as granite fines or 0-4mm granite sand, is a finely crushed aggregate produced during the granite crushing process. It consists of small stone particles ranging from fine dust up to 4mm grit.

Granite dust is primarily used as a smooth laying course for artificial grass, block paving, and flagstones. It is also used to fill gaps between paving slabs, mix into heavy-duty concrete, or level out sub-bases before laying hardscaping features.

What is the difference between granite dust and sharp sand?

While both are coarse, angular materials, granite dust is made from crushed hard granite rock rather than quarried silica sand. Granite dust compacts much firmer and creates a more durable, rot-resistant base, making it the preferred choice for artificial lawns and heavy paving.

Is granite dust suitable for artificial grass?

Yes. Granite dust is considered the gold standard laying base for artificial grass installations. When compacted, it creates a flat, solid foundation that allows water to drain freely through while preventing the surface from shifting or holding moisture beneath the lawn.

Does granite dust compact well?

Yes. Due to its varied particle sizes—from fine dust to 4mm angular grit—granite dust binds together exceptionally well when compacted with a vibrating plate or hand tamper, forming a rigid, non-flexible screed layer. We hire out vibrating plates if required.

Is granite dust fish-friendly and safe for gardens?

Yes. Granite is an inert, non-reactive natural rock that does not affect soil or water pH. It is safe for garden beds, footpaths, and surrounding aquatic features (though washing away fine dust before submerged pond use is recommended).
