Kiln Dried Sand - Small Bag
Kiln Dried Sand is a natural, specially selected washed and dried sand designed for use as a jointing or grouting sand on concrete block paving projects.
It has been designed to comply with the gradings given in BS 7533 Part 3 1997.
Kiln Dried Sand is a clean, dry, fine silica sand that has been baked in a kiln to remove all moisture. It is primarily used as jointing sand for block paving, driveways, patios, and paving slabs.
Specifically, it serves several main purposes:
-
Locking Paving in Place: Brushed dry into narrow joints between concrete or stone blocks, it creates friction that stabilizes the blocks and prevents horizontal movement or shifting under load.
-
Allowing Natural Drainage: The clean, fine grain structure allows water to drain through the joints into the sub-base, preventing surface water accumulation.
-
Preventing Weed Infiltration: By completely filling gaps between blocks, it leaves less open space for weed seeds to take root.
-
Specialist Mortars & Render Blends: Works as a clean, consistent dry aggregate for specific cement mixtures, synthetic resin mortars, and industrial flooring mixes.
-
Infill for Artificial Turf: Used as a ballast in artificial grass installations to weigh down the carpet, hold grass blades upright, and keep the backing flat.

Can I use kiln dried sand when it is raining or the block paving is wet?
The paving blocks and the sand must be completely dry during installation. If applied to a damp surface, the sand will clump together and stick to the top of the blocks rather than flowing freely down into the joints.
Why use kiln dried sand instead of standard building sand or sharp sand?
Kiln dried sand is much finer, uniform, and completely moisture-free. This allows it to sink easily into tiny, narrow gaps between blocks. Regular building sand contains moisture and larger aggregates that block joint openings and cause clumping.
How much kiln dried sand do I need for my block paving project?
Coverage depends on block size and joint width, but a standard 20kg–25kg bag typically covers approximately 3 to 5 square metres of standard block paving.
Does kiln dried sand stop weeds permanently?
While filling joints tightly leaves little room for weed roots to take hold, kiln dried sand alone is not a weed killer. Airborne seeds can still settle on top over time. Applying a joint stabilizing sealer over the sand after brushing helps lock it in place and further inhibits weed growth.
Will kiln dried sand wash away when it rains?
Once compacted tightly into the narrow joints between blocks, the sand locks together and creates friction. Normal rainfall will drain through without washing it away. However, high-pressure jet washers can blast it out, so avoid pointing pressure washers directly into the joints.
