Bulk Bag Yellow Building Sand
Yellow or Milton soft building sand can be used for a lighter mortar mix or for plastering and rendering applications.
Available in: Bulk Bags (approx 1 tonne), Half Bulk Bags (approx 1/2 tonne) Bulk Loose (from 1/2 tonne, on enquiry), Poly Bags (approx 25kg)
As an approximate guide, one bulk bag will cover:
• 18–20m² at a depth of 25mm
• 9–10m² at a depth of 50mm
• 4.5–5m² at a depth of 100mm
Bricklaying mortar, pointing, and general masonry work commonly require building sand mixed into mortar, while rendering and specialized bedding layers may require varying depths depending on project requirements.
These figures are estimates only. Actual coverage will vary according to the bag weight, moisture content, compaction and the accuracy of the excavation.

Yellow building sand is intended for bricklaying mortar, pointing, and general masonry rather than a decorative finished surface. Colour and grain texture can vary according to the source of the sand.
Prepare the working area and underlying masonry or sub-base appropriately, ensuring all surfaces are clean and free of debris.
Mix the yellow building sand with cement and water in the appropriate ratio (typically 3:1 to 5:1 depending on whether it is used for brickwork mortar, rendering, or pointing) using a mechanical mixer or mixing board until a smooth, workable consistency is achieved.
Yellow building sand is often mixed with white cement to create a light-coloured mortar.
Apply the mortar mix evenly to the prepared area using a trowel for bricklaying, rendering, pointing, or bedding. Ensure full mortar joints and tool or smooth the surface to the desired finish before the mix begins to set.
Requirements vary according to ground conditions, structural loading, and the type of masonry project. Follow the project specification or seek professional advice where appropriate.
Available for collection from our Rugby branch or local delivery using our own fleet.

What is yellow building sand?
Yellow building sand is a fine, soft aggregate washed and screened to produce a smooth, workable material. Its warm yellow tone comes from natural iron minerals found within the quarry source.
What is yellow building sand used for?
Yellow building sand is primarily mixed with cement and water to produce mortar for bricklaying, blockwork, pointing, and external rendering. Its fine texture provides high consistency and workability for masonry work.
What is the difference between yellow building sand and sharp sand?
Yellow building sand consists of fine, rounded grains that produce a smooth, pliable mortar suitable for laying bricks and rendering walls. Sharp sand features larger, angular grains and lower clay content, making it ideal for concrete, screeding, and heavy bedding layers.
Why choose yellow building sand over red sand?
The choice is aesthetic. Yellow building sand produces a lighter, warm buff-colored mortar joint that complements lighter bricks, stone, or standard grey mortar applications, whereas red sand produces a distinct reddish mortar.
Does yellow building sand drain well?
No. Building sand contains fine silt and clay particles designed to hold moisture and bind mortar together. Because it compacts tightly, it is not suitable for drainage applications, lawn top-dressing, or paving screed beds.
Is yellow building sand safe for children's sandpits?
No. Unwashed building sand contains fine particles that can stain clothing and compact into a hard surface when wet. Specially washed, non-staining play sand should always be used for sandpits instead.
