Half Bulk Bag Red Building Sand
PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A HALF BULK BAG
Red Soft Building Sand can be used in various building applications typically for mortar mix.
Available in: Bulk Bags (approx 1 tonne), Half Bulk Bags (approx 1/2 tonne) Bulk Loose (from 1/2 tonne, on enquiry), Poly Bags (approx 25kg)
As an approximate guide, one bulk bag will cover:
• 18–20m² at a depth of 25mm
• 9–10m² at a depth of 50mm
• 4.5–5m² at a depth of 100mm
Bricklaying mortar, pointing, and general masonry work commonly require building sand mixed into mortar, while rendering and specialized bedding layers may require varying depths depending on project requirements.
These figures are estimates only. Actual coverage will vary according to the bag weight, moisture content, compaction and the accuracy of the excavation.
Not sure how many bags you require? Call our Rugby team on 01788 866945 with the length, width and required depth.
Red building sand is intended for bricklaying mortar, pointing, and general masonry rather than a decorative finished surface. Colour and grain texture can vary according to the source of the sand.
Prepare the working area and underlying masonry or sub-base appropriately, ensuring all surfaces are clean and free of debris.
Mix the red building sand with cement and water in the appropriate ratio (typically 3:1 to 5:1 depending on the structural or pointing requirements) using a mechanical mixer or mixing board until a smooth, workable mortar consistency is achieved.
Apply the mortar mix evenly to the prepared area using a trowel for bricklaying, pointing, or bedding. Ensure full mortar joints and strike or tool the joints to the desired finish before the mix begins to set.
Requirements vary according to ground conditions, structural loading, and the type of brickwork or masonry. Follow the project specification or seek professional advice where appropriate.
Available for collection from our Rugby branch or local delivery using our own fleet.

What is red building sand?
Red building sand is a fine, soft aggregate washed and screened to produce a smooth, workable material. Its natural red coloration comes from iron oxide deposits found within the quarry source.
What is red building sand used for?
Red building sand is primarily mixed with cement and water to produce mortar for bricklaying, pointing, blockwork, and external rendering. It provides excellent consistency and workability for bricklayers.
What is the difference between red building sand and sharp sand?
Red building sand consists of fine, rounded grains with a soft texture, making it smooth and easy to spread for brick mortar. Sharp sand has larger, angular grains and lower clay content, making it suitable for concrete, paving screeds, and heavy bedding layers rather than brickwork.
Why choose red building sand over yellow or white building sand?
The choice is mainly visual. Red sand creates a warm, reddish-toned mortar joint that complements red brickwork or matches existing historic masonry, whereas yellow or white sand produces lighter mortar shades.
Does red building sand stain surrounding surfaces?
Because of its natural iron oxide content, wet red sand and mortar can leave temporary stains on porous stone or paving if allowed to dry on them. It is best to brush down adjacent brickwork and paving before the material sets.
Can red building sand be used for garden lawns or sandpits?
No. Building sand contains fine silt particles that can compact and harden, making it unsuitable for lawn top-dressing or drainage. For children's sandpits, certified washed play sand should always be used instead.
