As an approximate guide, a 0.5T (half-tonne) bag will cover:

• 4.5–5m² at a compacted depth of 50mm

• 2–2.5m² at a compacted depth of 100mm

• 1.5–1.75m² at a compacted depth of 150mm

Paths and patios commonly require around 100mm of compacted sub-base, while domestic driveways may require approximately 150mm or more depending on the ground conditions and expected loading.

MOT Type 1 is intended as a compacted sub-base rather than a decorative finished surface. Colour and appearance can vary according to the source of the stone.

Excavate the area to the required depth and prepare the ground appropriately. A suitable geotextile membrane may be required where the subgrade is soft, unstable or likely to mix with the aggregate.
Spread the MOT Type 1 evenly and compact it thoroughly using a suitable plate compactor or roller. For deeper sub-bases, lay and compact the material in separate layers rather than attempting to compact the full depth in one operation.
Check the required finished levels and falls before installing paving, block paving, tarmac or another final surface.

Bulk bags will normally be delivered by a crane-equipped lorry. Delivery is kerbside and the final offloading position is always subject to safe access and the driver’s discretion.

Please tell us before delivery about:

• Narrow roads or restricted entrances
• Parked vehicles or limited turning space
• Overhead cables, trees or other obstructions
• Soft, sloping or unsuitable ground
• Any other access concerns

How much is in the bulk bag?

The bag contains approximately one tonne. As with all loose aggregates, the precise weight and volume can vary slightly.

Is MOT Type 1 suitable beneath a patio?

Yes. It is commonly used to create a stable compacted sub-base beneath concrete, natural stone and porcelain paving.

Can I use it for a driveway?

Yes, subject to suitable ground preparation, depth and compaction. Driveways usually require a deeper sub-base than paths or patios.

Is MOT Type 1 the same as hardcore?

“Hardcore” is a general term for material used as fill or sub-base. MOT Type 1 is a specifically graded aggregate containing stone and fines that compact together to form a dense base.

Is it suitable for drainage?

MOT Type 1 contains fines and is designed to compact densely. For a free-draining application, ask us about a suitable clean or open-graded stone instead.

Can you deliver it over a wall or fence?

This depends on safe vehicle access, crane reach, the weight of the bag and any overhead obstructions. Call us on 01788 866945 before ordering if the required offloading position may be difficult.
