Lawn top-dressing commonly requires around 25mm to 50mm, new lawn turfing or seeding typically requires around 100mm, while raised beds and planting borders may require 150mm or more depending on current soil quality.

Screened topsoil is intended as a growing medium and soil conditioner. Colour, texture, and natural organic composition can vary according to the source of the soil.

Prepare the receiving area by removing weeds, debris, and large stones, then lightly loosen the existing base subsoil with a fork.

Spread the top soil evenly over the prepared area to the recommended depth, typically 50mm to 100mm depending on whether you are levelling a lawn, topping beds, or preparing for turfing. Rake through to level the surface and firm down gently to eliminate air pockets.

Water the area thoroughly after application, especially prior to laying turf, sowing grass seed, or planting out.

Requirements vary according to existing soil conditions, plant species, and the intended use. Follow specific planting guidelines or seek professional advice where appropriate.

Bulk bags will normally be delivered by a crane-equipped lorry. Delivery is kerbside and the final offloading position is always subject to safe access and the driver’s discretion.

What is screened topsoil?

Screened topsoil is high-quality soil that has been passed through a mesh or sieve to remove large stones, roots, weeds, and debris. This process results in a fine, consistent texture that is easy to spread and work with.

 

What is the difference between screened topsoil and unscreened topsoil?

Screened topsoil is refined and free from large clumps, rocks, and plant waste, making it ideal for lawn laying, seeding, and flower beds. Unscreened topsoil is raw earth that may contain large stones, roots, and debris, making it better suited for bulk sub-surface filling rather than fine gardening.

 

Is screened topsoil the same as compost?

No. Topsoil is a natural soil layer composed of mineral particles (sand, silt, clay) and organic matter. Compost is a dark, concentrated organic material made from decomposed plant matter used primarily to feed plants and improve soil quality.

 

Can I plant directly into screened topsoil?

Yes. Screened topsoil provides a stable, nutrient-rich base with excellent structure and moisture retention, making it ideal for growing grass, vegetables, flowers, and shrubs.

 

Does screened topsoil weed easily?

While screening removes existing weed roots and stems, topsoil is a natural organic product that may contain dormant wind-blown seeds. Applying a mulch layer or regular maintenance will keep any emerging weeds under control.

 

Why does topsoil color vary?

The color of screened topsoil—ranging from rich dark brown to lighter reddish tones—depends on its geographic origin and organic content. Color variation is natural and does not indicate poor quality.
