Prepare the planting area by weeding thoroughly and loosening the existing soil with a fork or spade.
For soil conditioning, spread a 25mm to 50mm layer of peat-free compost over the surface and gently dig or rake it into the top layer of topsoil. For containers, pots, or raised beds, fill directly with the compost, firming down lightly to eliminate large air pockets.
Water the area or container thoroughly after planting to help settlement and maintain steady moisture levels.
Requirements vary according to plant species, ground conditions, and the intended use. Follow specific plant care instructions or seek professional advice where appropriate.

What is peat-free compost?
Peat-free compost is a sustainable growing medium formulated entirely without natural peat moss. It is designed to support healthy plant growth while protecting delicate peatland ecosystems.
What is peat-free compost made from?
Peat-free compost is typically made from a blend of organic materials, including composted bark, wood fibre, green waste, coir (coconut fibre), and added plant nutrients or bio-stimulants.
How does peat-free compost differ from traditional peat-based compost?
Peat-free blends tend to have a slightly coarser texture and different water-holding properties. While traditional peat retains water uniformly, peat-free compost may look dry on the surface while remaining moist underneath, requiring slightly different watering habits.
Is peat-free compost suitable for all garden plants?
Most general-purpose peat-free composts are suitable for hanging baskets, containers, beds, and borders. However, acid-loving plants (such as rhododendrons, azaleas, and camellias) require a specialized peat-free ericaceous compost to thrive.
Does peat-free compost require different watering or feeding?
Yes. Because the surface layer can dry out faster than the core, it is best to check moisture levels an inch below the surface before watering. Because wood fibres break down continuously, liquid plant food is often recommended earlier in the growing season compared to peat-based mixes.
Why is using peat-free compost better for the environment?
Peat bogs are natural carbon sinks and vital ecosystems for wildlife. Choosing peat-free alternatives prevents the destruction of these habitats, reduces carbon emissions released during peat harvesting, and supports sustainable waste recycling.
