Does solid softwood skirting board require acclimation before fitting?

Yes. Store the timber lengths flat inside the room where they will be installed for 3 to 5 days prior to fitting. This allows the natural wood to adjust to the room's temperature and humidity levels, preventing shrinkage or warping after installation.

How do I prepare and paint unfinished softwood skirting boards?

Treat all visible knots with a knotting solution to stop natural wood resin from bleeding through your paint. Once dry, apply a wood primer, sand lightly with fine-grade sandpaper (180–240 grit), and apply your chosen topcoat (such as satin, eggshell, or gloss).

How do I join reversible skirting boards at room corners?

For external 90-degree corners, cut matching 45-degree mitre joints. For internal 90-degree corners, a scribed joint is best—cut the profile of one board to overlap the face of the other using a coping saw to create a tight joint even if the walls are not perfectly square.

What is the best way to fix solid softwood skirting boards to the wall?

Apply a continuous bead of high-grab panel adhesive to the rear face, then secure the board into timber wall studs or masonry using countersunk screws or lost-head nails. Sink the fixings slightly below the timber surface, fill with wood filler, and sand smooth before finishing.

Can reversible skirting boards be used with laminate or real wood flooring?

Yes. Skirting boards are ideal for fitting over the expansion gap required around the perimeter of timber, laminate, or vinyl flooring. Ensure you leave a slight gap above the finished floor level or fix the skirting strictly to the wall (not the floor) to allow the flooring to float freely.
