What mortar mix should be used with Class B engineering bricks below DPC?

For below-ground work, foundations, and exposed boundary walls subject to saturation and freezing, use a Class M12 / Designation (i) mortar mix—typically 1 part cement to 3 parts building/sharp sand. This ensures the mortar strength matches the durability of the engineering brick.

Are Class B engineering bricks frost resistant?

Yes. Class B engineering bricks carry an F2 rating under BS EN 771-1, meaning they possess full freeze-thaw resistance under severe exposure conditions (such as un-rendered retaining walls, parapets, and ground-contact masonry).

How many 65mm bricks are needed per square metre of single-skin brickwork?

You will need approximately 60 bricks per m² for a standard single-skin (102.5mm thick) wall, assuming standard 10mm mortar joints and accounting for a typical 5% site wastage allowance.

Can Class B engineering bricks be used for aesthetic facing walls?

While they can be left exposed, engineering bricks are manufactured primarily for technical performance (strength and low water absorption) rather than decorative finish. Visual consistency and surface texture may vary between batches, so facing bricks are generally preferred for visible house elevations.
