What are the main advantages of MDF architrave over solid timber?

MDF is free of knots, grain defects, and sap pockets, so it will not warp, twist, or split. Its ultra-smooth surface provides a flawless finish when painted, without the risk of knot bleed or grain showing through over time.

Does pre-primed architrave need to be primed again before painting?

No. The factory-applied primer seals the surface and provides an ideal base for finishing coats. You only need to lightly sand any cut edges or filled fixing holes before applying your final topcoat of satin, gloss, or eggshell paint.

How do I calculate how much architrave I need for a standard door frame?

A standard single interior door frame requires two vertical legs (approx. 2.1m each) and one horizontal header piece (approx. 1m). Most architrave is sold in set sets or individual lengths; a 2.1m or 2.2m length set (5.1m to 5.5m total) is typically sufficient for one side of a single door frame, with 10% extra added for mitre cuts.

How should MDF architrave be fixed to a door lining?

Apply a continuous bead of high-grab panel adhesive to the back of the architrave, then pin it to the timber door casing using lost-head lost-head nails or a second-fix Brad nailer. Set fixings slightly below the surface, fill with fine wood filler, and sand smooth prior to painting.

How do I join architrave at the top corners of a door frame?

Cut a 45-degree mitre angle on the top of each vertical leg and both ends of the horizontal header piece using a mitre saw or mitre box. For a tight, seamless corner joint, apply a small amount of wood glue or PVA to the mitre faces before pinning the pieces together.
