As an approximate guide, one bulk bag will cover:

• 10–12m² at a depth of 50mm

• 6.5–7.5m² at a depth of 75mm

• 5–6m² at a depth of 100mm

Garden borders, rockeries, and footpaths commonly require around 40mm to 50mm of decorative chippings, while domestic driveways typically require approximately 50mm to 75mm depending on the ground conditions and sub-base.

These figures are estimates only. Actual coverage will vary according to the bag weight, ground conditions, compaction and the accuracy of the excavation.

Excavate the area to the required depth and prepare the ground appropriately. A suitable geotextile membrane may be required to prevent weed growth and stop the subgrade from mixing with the aggregate.

Spread the 20mm Derbyshire White chippings evenly over the prepared sub-base to the recommended depth, typically around 40mm to 50mm for borders and footpaths, or 50mm to 75mm for driveways. Rake the chippings to ensure an even distribution across the entire area.

Check the finished surface level and slope to ensure proper drainage away from surrounding structures. Ensure the aggregate depth is consistent to prevent exposed patches or uneven surface layers.

Requirements vary according to ground conditions, loading, and the intended use of the surface. Follow the project specification or seek professional advice where appropriate.

What are 20mm Derbyshire White chippings?

20mm Derbyshire White chippings are an angular decorative aggregate sourced from natural limestone quarries in Derbyshire. They feature bright white to light cream and subtle grey tones that add a clean, bright finish to landscape designs.

What are 20mm Derbyshire White chippings used for?

These decorative chippings are commonly used for garden borders, footpaths, rockeries, plant bed toppings, and driveways. Their bright appearance makes them ideal for highlighting darker features or brightening up shaded garden areas.

Are Derbyshire White chippings suitable for driveways?

Yes. At 20mm in size, the angular limestone stones interlock well under vehicle tires, creating a firm, durable driving surface that won't easily lodge in tire treads.

How does the appearance of Derbyshire White chippings change when wet?

When dry, the stones present a soft, matte white-to-light-grey finish. When wet, the natural grey tones and subtle marble-like veining within the limestone become more prominent.

Are Derbyshire White chippings fish-friendly?

No. Because these chippings are made from natural limestone (calcium carbonate), they can leach minerals into water, raising the pH and alkalinity levels. They should not be used in fish ponds or aquatic environments.

Do Derbyshire White chippings fade or discolor over time?

The stone itself is UV-stable and will not fade in sunlight. However, like any light-colored natural stone, light limestone chippings can show dirt or algae over time in damp, shaded areas, which can be maintained with a light wash or fresh top-up.
