As an approximate guide, one bulk bag will cover:

• 10–12m² at a depth of 50mm

• 6.5–7.5m² at a depth of 75mm

• 5–6m² at a depth of 100mm

Garden borders, flower beds, and footpaths commonly require around 40mm to 50mm of decorative chippings, while domestic driveways typically require approximately 50mm to 75mm depending on the ground conditions and sub-base.

These figures are estimates only. Actual coverage will vary according to the bag weight, ground conditions, compaction and the accuracy of the excavation.

20mm Cotswold decorative chippings are intended as a decorative surface, border, or driveway topping. Colour, natural veining, and angular shape can vary according to the source of the stone.

Excavate the area to the required depth and prepare the ground appropriately. A suitable geotextile membrane may be required to prevent weed growth and stop the subgrade from mixing with the aggregate.

Spread the 20mm Cotswold chippings evenly over the prepared sub-base to the recommended depth, typically around 40mm to 50mm for borders and footpaths, or 50mm to 75mm for driveways. Rake the chippings to ensure an even distribution across the entire area.

Check the finished surface level and slope to ensure proper drainage away from surrounding structures. Ensure the aggregate depth is consistent to prevent exposed patches or uneven surface layers.

Requirements vary according to ground conditions, loading, and the intended use of the surface. Follow the project specification or seek professional advice where appropriate.

What are 20mm Cotswold chippings?

20mm Cotswold chippings, often called Cotswold buff or Cotswold stone, are a classic decorative aggregate made from crushed natural limestone. They feature warm, creamy-buff to light yellow tones and angular shapes.

What are 20mm Cotswold chippings used for?

These chippings are widely used for garden borders, footpaths, driveways, rockeries, and plant toppers. Their bright, neutral tones offer a traditional, countryside look that brightens up garden beds and complements brickwork.

Are 20mm Cotswold chippings suitable for driveways?

Yes. At 20mm, the angular limestone stones interlock well to form a firm driving surface that won't easily lodge in vehicle tire treads or shift out of place.

How does the appearance of Cotswold chippings change when wet?

When dry, Cotswold chippings display a soft, matte cream or pastel-yellow tone. When wet, the stones deepen into a richer, warm golden-yellow finish.

Are Cotswold chippings fish-friendly?

No. Because Cotswold stone is a natural limestone (calcium carbonate), it can dissolve slightly in water over time, raising the pH and alkalinity. It should not be used in fish ponds or aquatic environments.

Do 20mm Cotswold chippings discolour over time?

While the stone itself is UV-stable and does not fade, light-coloured limestone is naturally porous. In damp or heavily shaded areas, it can absorb dirt or develop algae over time, which can be refreshed with a hose, a light jet wash, or a fresh top-up layer.
