As an approximate guide, one bulk bag will cover:

• 10–12m² at a depth of 50mm

• 6.5–7.5m² at a depth of 75mm

• 5–6m² at a depth of 100mm

Garden borders, rockeries, and footpaths commonly require around 40mm to 50mm of decorative chippings, while domestic driveways typically require approximately 50mm to 75mm depending on the ground conditions and sub-base.

These figures are estimates only. Actual coverage will vary according to the bag weight, ground conditions, compaction and the accuracy of the excavation.

Excavate the area to the required depth and prepare the ground appropriately. A suitable geotextile membrane may be required to prevent weed growth and stop the subgrade from mixing.

Spread evenly over the prepared sub-base to the recommended depth. Rake or lay by hand to ensure an even, flat distribution across the entire area.

Check the finished surface level and slope to ensure proper drainage away from surrounding structures. Ensure the depth is consistent to prevent exposed patches or uneven surface layers.

Requirements vary according to ground conditions, loading, and the intended use of the surface. Follow the project specification or seek professional advice where appropriate.

What gives Polar White Chippings their distinctive appearance?

Polar White Chippings are crafted from high-grade natural marble, giving them an ultra-bright, crystalline white appearance. The angular stones catch and reflect sunlight, adding a brilliant sparkle to garden spaces. When dry, they offer a crisp, pure matte white look, and when wet, the natural quartz veins and subtle gray accents show through with enhanced clarity.

What are the primary uses for 20mm Polar White Chippings?

The 20mm sizing is exceptionally versatile and works beautifully for garden pathways, flower bed borders, rockeries, alpine displays, and patio edges. Their striking contrast makes them a popular choice for contemporary garden designs, framing dark paving, green lawn borders, or wooden decking.

Are 20mm Polar White Chippings suitable for driveways?

While the 20mm size is angular and interlocks well under foot traffic, marble is a softer stone than granite or basalt. It can be used on light-use driveways, but over time under heavy vehicle tires, marble may break down faster than harder aggregates. For driveways, it is best suited for lower-traffic areas or decorative borders.

Do Polar White Chippings require any special maintenance?

To keep bright white marble chippings looking their best, it is advisable to lay a heavy-duty weed membrane underneath to prevent soil splash and weeds from rising through. Installing them away from falling autumn leaves or heavy overhanging trees will also prevent natural staining, and a periodic rinse with clean water will keep their sparkling finish fresh.
