As an approximate guide, one bulk bag will cover:

• 10–12m² at a depth of 50mm

• 6.5–7.5m² at a depth of 75mm

• 5–6m² at a depth of 100mm

Garden borders, flower beds, and footpaths commonly require around 40mm to 50mm of decorative chippings, while domestic driveways typically require approximately 50mm to 75mm depending on the ground conditions and sub-base.

These figures are estimates only. Actual coverage will vary according to the bag weight, ground conditions, compaction and the accuracy of the excavation.

Excavate the area to the required depth and prepare the ground appropriately. A suitable geotextile membrane may be required to prevent weed growth and stop the subgrade from mixing.

Spread evenly over the prepared sub-base to the recommended depth. Rake or lay by hand to ensure an even, flat distribution across the entire area.

Check the finished surface level and slope to ensure proper drainage away from surrounding structures. Ensure the depth is consistent to prevent exposed patches or uneven surface layers.

Requirements vary according to ground conditions, loading, and the intended use of the surface. Follow the project specification or seek professional advice where appropriate.

What colors make up Spanish Gold Chippings, and how do they look when wet?

Spanish Gold Chippings feature a striking mix of warm yellow, gold, rich amber, and subtle cream tones. When dry, they offer a soft, bright matte finish that lights up darker garden areas. When wet, the colors darken into deep, glossy golden shades that add dramatic texture during rain.

What are the primary landscaping uses for 20mm Spanish Gold Chippings?

The 20mm size is versatile and popular for driveways, garden pathways, flower bed borders, rockeries, and patio edges. The angular profile of the chippings allows them to interlock, providing a firm, flat surface that is easy to walk on and maintain.

Are 20mm Spanish Gold Chippings suitable for driveways?

Yes, 20mm Spanish Gold Chippings are ideal for driveways. The angular aggregate interlocks tightly under weight, preventing the stones from scattering or rutting under vehicle tires far better than rounded pebbles.

Are Spanish Gold Chippings fish-friendly for ponds and water features?

Spanish Gold is typically a natural flint or hard aggregate, but some varieties contain limestone elements. Because limestone can leach into water and alter pH levels, it is best to check the specific batch or wash and test the stones before placing them directly into active fish ponds.

How do Spanish Gold Chippings assist with weed control and moisture retention?

When installed over a durable geotextile weed membrane, the dense layer of stone blocks sunlight to stop weed seeds from germinating. The chippings also act as an insulating protective layer, slowing down soil water evaporation in summer and shielding plant roots from harsh winter temperatures.
