Excavate the area to the required depth and prepare the ground appropriately. A suitable geotextile membrane may be required to prevent weed growth and stop the subgrade from mixing.

Spread evenly over the prepared sub-base to the recommended depth. Rake or lay by hand to ensure an even, flat distribution across the entire area.

Check the finished surface level and slope to ensure proper drainage away from surrounding structures. Ensure the depth is consistent to prevent exposed patches or uneven surface layers.

Requirements vary according to ground conditions, loading, and the intended use of the surface. Follow the project specification or seek professional advice where appropriate.

What color are Welsh Green Chippings, and how do they look when wet?

Welsh Green Chippings feature a distinctive, subtle olive to sea-green hue with natural grey undertones. When dry, they offer a muted, soft sage appearance that blends seamlessly into natural garden environments. When wet, the deep green tones intensify, bringing out a richer, polished look that enhances surrounding planting.

What are the best landscaping uses for 14mm Welsh Green Chippings?

The 14mm sizing makes these chippings an excellent choice for garden pathways, flower bed borders, rockeries, alpine displays, and container top-dressing. Their angular shape allows them to lie flat and interlock, providing a smooth, compact surface that is easy to walk on.

Can 14mm Welsh Green Chippings be used on a driveway?

While 14mm chippings can be used on short footpaths, a 20mm aggregate is generally better suited for driveways. Smaller 14mm stones can occasionally become trapped in tire treads or crushed under heavy vehicle weight. For vehicular areas, 20mm aggregates offer superior stability, whereas 14mm is ideal for pedestrian walkways and decorative borders.

Do Welsh Green Chippings help with weed prevention and drainage?

Yes, these natural slate or granite-based chippings provide excellent drainage, allowing rainwater to pass easily into the ground to avoid puddle formation. When installed over a geotextile weed membrane, they block sunlight effectively to suppress weed growth while keeping the soil underneath cool and moist.
