Excavate the area to the required depth and prepare the ground appropriately. A suitable geotextile membrane may be required to prevent weed growth and stop the subgrade from mixing.

Spread evenly over the prepared sub-base to the recommended depth. Rake or lay by hand to ensure an even, flat distribution across the entire area.

Check the finished surface level and slope to ensure proper drainage away from surrounding structures. Ensure the depth is consistent to prevent exposed patches or uneven surface layers.

Requirements vary according to ground conditions, loading, and the intended use of the surface. Follow the project specification or seek professional advice where appropriate.

What color are Terracotta Red Chippings, and do they change when wet?

Terracotta Red Chippings feature a distinctive mix of earthy red, warm orange, and rich brick-pink tones. When dry, they offer a soft, rustic matte finish. When wet, the colors intensify into deep, vibrant reddish-brown hues that bring extra warmth and contrast to your garden.

What are the best uses for the 14mm size?

The 14mm size is versatile and multi-purpose. It is ideally suited for garden pathways, flower bed borders, rockeries, alpine gardens, and around water features. The smaller 14mm stones settle tightly together, making them comfortable to walk on while maintaining a neat, compact appearance.

Do I need to install a weed membrane underneath?

While the chippings themselves block light and aid in weed suppression, laying a heavy-duty geotextile weed membrane underneath is highly recommended. This prevents weeds from pushing through from below while allowing rainwater to drain naturally into the soil.

Are Terracotta Red Chippings fish-friendly?

No, natural terracotta and limestone-based aggregates can alter the pH balance of pond water. It is recommended to thoroughly wash and test any stone aggregate, or choose explicitly fish-friendly pebbles, before introducing them to an active fish pond.
