Excavate the area to the required depth and prepare the ground appropriately. A suitable geotextile membrane may be required to prevent weed growth and stop the subgrade from mixing with the aggregate.

Spread the 20mm Black Ice chippings evenly over the prepared sub-base to the recommended depth, typically around 40mm to 50mm for borders and footpaths, or 50mm to 75mm for driveways. Rake the chippings to ensure an even distribution across the entire area.

Check the finished surface level and slope to ensure proper drainage away from surrounding structures. Ensure the aggregate depth is consistent to prevent exposed patches or uneven surface layers.

Requirements vary according to ground conditions, loading, and the intended use of the surface. Follow the project specification or seek professional advice where appropriate.

What are 20mm Black Ice chippings?

Black Ice chippings are a contemporary decorative aggregate made from a premium blend of dark basalt, light grey, and white marble stones. Their contrasting tones create a distinctive monochrome finish.

What are Black Ice chippings used for?

Black Ice chippings are widely used for decorative garden borders, rockeries, footpaths, water features, and domestic driveways. They offer a modern, high-contrast look for landscaping projects.

How does the appearance of Black Ice chippings change when wet?

When dry, the chippings feature a softer, pastel contrast of mid-grey, white, and charcoal tones. When wet, the black basalt deepens to an intense jet-black and the white marble pops, creating a striking glossy contrast.

Are Black Ice chippings suitable for driveways?

Yes. At 20mm in size, the angular stones interlock effectively under vehicular weight, helping to form a stable surface that stays in place and won't lodge in tire treads.

Are Black Ice chippings fish-friendly?

Generally, no. Because Black Ice contains natural marble stones (which are calcium-based), it can gradually raise the pH level and alkalinity of water, making it unsuitable for fish ponds or aquatic life.

Will the colour of Black Ice chippings fade over time?

No. Black Ice is composed of hard, natural marble and basalt stone. The colours are completely natural and UV-stable, meaning they will not bleach or fade in sunlight over time.
