What is the difference between red and blue engineering bricks?

The main difference is the aesthetic appearance. While both meet the strict Class B standards for compressive strength (minimum 75 N/mm²) and low water absorption (under 7%), red engineering bricks are made from clays that fire to a warm red color, whereas blue bricks are fired in a reducing atmosphere to achieve their signature dark blue-grey tone.

Are red solid engineering bricks frost-resistant?

Yes. Because they have a low water absorption rate, very little moisture can enter the brick, making them highly resistant to cracking or spalling during freeze-thaw cycles.

Can red engineering bricks be used for damp-proof course (DPC) level work?

Yes, their low porosity makes them excellent for use below or at DPC level to prevent rising damp, though they should still be paired with an appropriate damp-proof membrane as required by building regulations.

Do red solid engineering bricks require special mortar?

Because they have low suction (they don't absorb water from mortar as quickly as porous facing bricks), you should use a suitable, workable mortar mix and avoid overly wet mixes to prevent the bricks from sliding.

How many red solid engineering bricks are needed per square metre?

For a standard single-skin wall with 10mm mortar joints, you will need approximately 60 bricks per square metre.
