What is the difference between 65mm and 73mm engineering bricks?

The main difference is the height of the brick. A standard 65mm brick matches traditional UK brick dimensions, whereas a 73mm brick is taller (often referred to as a "deep" or imperial-matching brick). The choice between them usually depends on matching existing brickwork heights or course requirements.

Can I use these bricks in areas prone to freezing?

Yes. With a water absorption rate of less than 7% and high frost-resistance ratings (F2 classification), these bricks withstand freeze-thaw cycles exceptionally well without cracking or spalling.

Do these bricks require special cutting tools?

Yes. Because Class B engineering bricks are exceptionally hard and dense, standard hand chisels can struggle to make clean cuts. It is best to use an angle grinder with a diamond masonry blade or a wet tile/brick saw for accurate, clean cuts.

How many 73mm bricks do I need per square metre?

Because 73mm bricks are taller than standard 65mm bricks, you need fewer of them per square metre. For a standard single-skin wall with 10mm mortar joints, you will need approximately 54 bricks per square metre (compared to ~60 for 65mm bricks).

Are these bricks suitable for damp-proof courses (DPCs)?

While they have very low water absorption and are often used below DPC level, they are not a substitute for a physical damp-proof membrane or DPC roll. They should be used alongside a certified DPC system in accordance with building regulations.
