Will the colour of the oak timber change over time?

Yes. When exposed to outdoor sunlight and weather, green oak naturally ages from its initial warm honey-brown shade to an attractive silvery-grey patina over 6 to 12 months.

How do I fix oak sleepers together?

Use heavy-duty, stainless steel or specialist coated timber structural screws. Standard zinc-plated screws should be avoided because the natural tannins in oak cause corrosion and dark staining around the screw holes.

Do I need to pre-drill pilot holes when fixing oak sleepers?

Yes, pre-drilling pilot holes is essential. Solid oak is extremely dense, and green oak shrinks slightly as it seasons, which can cause un-drilled screws to snap or the timber to split near the ends.
