This untreated, solid oak sleeper is a premium, high-density landscaping timber used for heavy-duty structural and decorative garden projects. Oak is naturally durable and resistant to decay, offering a high-end, rustic aesthetic that naturally silvers over time without requiring chemical pressure treatments.

Common applications include:

• Raised Garden Beds & Vegetable Planters: Since oak is untreated and chemical-free, it is completely safe for organic vegetable patches, herb gardens, and ornamental borders.

• Retaining Walls & Terracing: Excellent for retaining soil on sloped gardens due to its high density, structural strength, and natural weight.

• Garden Steps & Steps Edging: Creates sturdy, long-lasting outdoor steps and defined border pathways.

Why is this sleeper untreated, and does it need chemical treatment?

Oak is a naturally durable hardwood containing natural tannins that make it highly resistant to rot, decay, and insect attack without needing synthetic pressure treatments. Leaving it untreated makes it safe for organic gardens, children's play areas, and vegetable beds.

Will the colour of the oak timber change over time?

Yes. When exposed to outdoor sunlight and weather, green oak naturally ages from its initial warm honey-brown shade to an attractive silvery-grey patina over 6 to 12 months.

How do I fix oak sleepers together?

Use heavy-duty, stainless steel or specialist coated timber structural screws. Standard zinc-plated screws should be avoided because the natural tannins in oak cause corrosion and dark staining around the screw holes.

Do I need to pre-drill pilot holes when fixing oak sleepers?

Yes, pre-drilling pilot holes is essential. Solid oak is extremely dense, and green oak shrinks slightly as it seasons, which can cause un-drilled screws to snap or the timber to split near the ends.

How long will an oak sleeper last outdoors?

Solid oak sleepers typically have an expected lifespan of 20 years or more, even when placed in direct contact with damp soil, outlasting untreated softwood alternatives by many years.
