Weed Control Membrane (also known as landscape fabric or weed suppression fabric) is a porous material—typically non-woven or woven spunbound polypropylene—designed to prevent weed growth in gardens while allowing air, water, and nutrients to pass through to the soil beneath.

It is primarily used for:

• Garden Beds & Flower Borders: Suppressing weed growth around shrubs, flower beds, and vegetable patches without choking plant roots or blocking rainwater.

• Under Decorative Aggregates: Laying beneath slate chippings, decorative gravel, wood bark, or plum slate to prevent weeds from growing up through the mulch while keeping the decorative topping clean from underlying mud.

• Under Artificial Grass: Acting as a protective weed barrier directly beneath artificial turf or sand sub-bases to stop weeds from pushing up through the drainage holes.

• Under Garden Decking & Patios: Preventing weed growth in dark, damp spaces beneath raised timber decking, paved pathways, and patio slabs.

Available for collection from our Rugby branch or local delivery using our own fleet.

Timber products are typically delivered in one of our vans or pickup trucks. Delivery is kerbside and the final offloading position is always subject to safe access and the driver’s discretion.

How do I plant through a weed control membrane?

Layout the membrane across your garden bed and secure the edges with ground pegs. Where you want to place a plant, use a sharp utility knife or scissors to cut an "X" or cross-shaped slit in the fabric. Fold back the four triangular flaps, dig your planting hole, insert the plant, and fold the flaps back around the stem before applying your surface mulch.

Do I need to cover the weed control membrane?

Yes. Uncovered membrane degrades over time due to UV exposure from sunlight. Furthermore, covering it with a 50mm layer of bark, mulch, slate, or gravel keeps the fabric weighted down, improves moisture retention in the soil, and hides the plastic sheet from view.

Why are weeds still growing on top of my weed control membrane?

Weed membranes prevent roots and dormant seeds in the subsoil from pushing up through the fabric. However, wind and birds can drop fresh weed seeds onto the gravel or bark layer above the membrane. Trapped dirt and decomposing mulch provide a thin growing medium for these top-down weeds, though their roots are shallow and very easy to pull out by hand.

How far should I overlap adjacent sheets of weed control fabric?

Always overlap adjoining sheets by at least 100mm to 150mm (or 200mm on sloped ground) and secure the joints with plastic or metal ground pegs every 1 meter. This prevents weeds from finding gaps between the seams as the fabric settles.
