1. Prepare the planting hole

Dig a hole approximately twice the width of the plant's root ball and no deeper than its original planting depth. Loosen the soil around the sides and base to encourage root growth.

2. Prepare the soil

Mix SylvaGrow Rose, Tree & Shrub Planting Compost thoroughly with the excavated garden soil to improve its structure. Avoid filling the planting hole entirely with compost, as blending it with the surrounding soil encourages roots to establish naturally.

3. Position the plant

Remove the plant carefully from its container and gently loosen any tightly packed roots. Place it in the planting hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding ground. For grafted plants, follow the recommended planting depth for the particular species.

4. Backfill and firm

Refill the hole with the prepared soil and compost mixture, gently firming around the roots to remove large air pockets. Avoid excessive compaction.

5. Water thoroughly

Water generously immediately after planting to settle the soil around the roots. Continue watering regularly during dry weather, particularly throughout the first growing season.

6. Mulch and maintain

Apply a layer of suitable mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Keep mulch clear of the trunk or main stems to prevent moisture-related problems.

Top Tip: For best results, plant during autumn or early spring when the soil is moist and temperatures are moderate. Newly planted trees and shrubs benefit from regular watering while their root systems become established.

When is the best time to plant roses, trees and shrubs?

Autumn and early spring are generally the best times, when the soil is moist and temperatures are cooler. Container-grown plants can usually be planted throughout the year, provided the ground is not frozen or waterlogged and adequate watering is maintained.

Does this compost help with drainage?

Yes, when incorporated into suitable garden soil, it can help improve soil structure and moisture management. However, it will not resolve severe drainage problems or permanently waterlogged ground.

Do I need to add fertiliser when planting?
